This 30,000 square foot ground-up gallery for contemporary art is located in West Chelsea. The neighborhood’s industrial heritage inspired the design’s simple material palette and monumentality.
The exposed concrete façade is gritty to resonate with surrounding structures, and elegant to reflect the refined identity of the client. A teak and glass storefront opens for large-scale art, creating a warm contrast in color. Starting on the façade, concrete continues through the entry walls, and remains present throughout the building within the sky-lit stair. Open to all floors, this atrium provides an expressive counterpoint to the restrained exhibition spaces.
The gallery is built to museum standards, designed to accommodate the range of represented artists. Gallery spaces are diverse in scale, materiality, and lighting for overall flexibility. The main exhibition space is an expansive 5,000 sf column-free gallery with smooth concrete floors and north-facing, sawtooth skylights. Public exhibition space continues on the second floor with more intimate galleries. The upper levels contain private functions such as viewing rooms, offices, a library, and art handling areas.
The building sets a new environmental standard for art related facilities as the first LEED Gold certified commercial gallery in the US, incorporating five green roof spaces, premium efficiency mechanicals, maximized daylighting, and locally sourced materials.
