Museum of Jewish Heritage

Join the Museum and Our Travel Circle to virtually discover the Jewish heritage of Freiburg, Germany. Jews have lived in Freiburg since the thirteenth century, suffering imprisonment and murder during the Black Death and a century of discrimination and expulsion. Learn about what happened when Jews officially returned to the city in the early seventeenth century and see the synagogue that was consecrated in 1885 following the Baden emancipation law of 1862. Our guide will also tell us the story of Hans Adolf Krebs, a Jewish faculty member at Freiburg University who was dismissed along with the other Jewish faculty members after the Nazis’ rise to power and went on to win the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1953. We will also learn about the fate of the Jewish community during the Holocaust and how the community has begun to rebuild in the years since.
