Meet at USS Maine Statue at Columbus Circle

Southwestern entrance to Central Park

Come journey back in time to years past before the dawn of the modern age, represented by the discovery of the incandescent lamp. This guided walking tour of Central Park will both entertain and educate.

Deepen your knowledge of exterior lighting and the instruments we use. We’ll look at historical lightposts and discuss lighting history through the decades. From whale oil to gas to electric… many evolutions of societal issues and mores were propelled by lighting. And those historic changes still influence how we find our way in the dark. Only through studying history can we grasp the factors that cause change and understand how they persist in modern lighting today.
