Bronx History and Activism Project

This program is made possible by NYPL’s Innovation Lab, which pilots new staff ideas for reaching and engaging our communities.

The Bronx History and Activism Project (BxHAP) is a bi-weekly virtual history and civic program that introduces participants to a topic in local history and utilizes local primary and secondary sources to help bring the topic to life. Local community leaders join the program and challenge participants to rethink preconceptions and engage with organizations and elected officials to improve our City.

We know the benefits of local history. Local history programs are vital because they can connect participants deeply to the communities where they live or work in. Additionally, local history programs ground library work with the community and increase engagement with the library. Finally this history program will utilize the social sciences to teach participants to respond to issues and ideas in their communities. We can reimagine a better, more ethical NYC together.

On October 10th we will cover the Revolutionary War period and Early Republic. On October 24th, we will cover Slavery, the Bronx's Role in Abolition of Slavery, and the Civil War's Impact on the Bronx and NY-Region.
