“Dear Fredy” Film Screening and Discussion

When the Nazis passed the Nuremberg Laws in 1935, Fredy Hirsch was a nineteen-year-old German Jew—and openly gay. He was deported to the Theresienstadt Ghetto and later Auschwitz. In Auschwitz, he set up a day care center, became much admired, and never hid his sexuality. Director Rubi Gat’s film Dear Fredy tells the story of Hirsch’s remarkable life and mysterious death—which happened on the eve of a revolt that never came to pass.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with Gat.

Rubi Gat is the Jerusalem born director and producer of Not a Hero. a film that depicts the journey of his son, a teenager in a wheelchair, to be accepted into the army like his peers. He is also the director and co-producer of Dear Fredy. He served as Chief Video Editor for the BBC bureau in Jerusalem from 1994 to 2010 and is the author of Rock, Paper, Scissors.
