Presented by Orange County Historian Johanna Yuan and Joan Porr, the first part of the talk will speak about a historic building nearly demolished by a private property owner and what she did as a resident to rally the community and politicians to save it. Joan will follow the preservation of the Broadway & Carpenter building to discuss how historically preservationists tried to save Downing-associated buildings from Urban Renewal demolition in the 1970s. This effort helped pave the path for Newburgh to become the second largest historic district in the state.
You’ll also learn about the self-guided tour of buildings designed by Downing and other contemporary architects, the historic markers at 355 Grand and the dedication marker for Schuyler at Downing park.
