This fall, MAS is celebrating design excellence in New York City with our 2024 MASterworks Awards! We have curated a selection of in person explorations and online in-conversations with this year’s honored projects.

On Thursday, November 7 from 10:30-11:15 AM, join MAS for a visit to 550 Madison, 2024 MASterworks winner for Best Restoration. The landmark building in bustling Midtown received an incredible renovation, featuring a revitalized lobby and a new public garden, among other updates. The Olayan Group, who led the renovation, engaged visionary international design firms in the project, including Snøhetta, Gensler, and Rockwell Group to honor Philip Johnson and John Burgee’s creation while reinterpreting the building for the way people live and work today.

When Philip Johnson designed 550 Madison, he drew upon the fundamental principles of classical architecture to create a building that felt monumental, modern, and completely different from what had come before. Snøhetta, Gensler and Rockwell Group worked with Olayan to build on Johnson’s foundation, reinterpreting 550 Madison for the way we live today: bringing in daylight and air, designing a ground floor podium that will become a new destination, and creating a spectacular green scape and amenity offering.
