Acclaimed artist Athena LaTocha’s large-scale installation explores the history of Green-Wood’s landscape as one of continuous movement and alteration, beginning with the glaciers that shaped the land in the prehistoric era, through the Rural Cemetery Movement of the nineteenth century.
On view in the Historic Chapel and outdoors at the foot of Battle Hill, LaTocha’s distinctive sculptures made primarily of lead incorporate soil, rocks, branches, trunks, and roots sourced from the Cemetery. The work embraces the distinctive character of Green-Wood and the role its caretakers have played in both the preservation and engineering of its natural environment.
