We are excited to celebrate the creativity and talent showcased in our "Greetings from..." Archtober Postcard Competition! This year, we invited creative minds across the five boroughs to submit a 4x6 postcard design to express their artistry and perspective on the built environment. In the months following our July open call, we received dozens of submissions from New Yorkers, showing us a glimpse of the future of the place they call home.

Thank you to everyone who participated and showcased their imagination in celebrating architecture and design. The jury selected three winning designs—congratulations to Santo Jacobsson, Victoria Tentler-Krylov, and James Wines! The jury also awarded an Honorable Mention to Christian Aguilar.

The three winning designs will be printed and available at the Center for Architecture throughout the month of Archtober, beginning with a celebration on October 1 at Exhibitions Opening Night. Please join us in congratulating our winners and celebrating the fantastic work of all the participants! Check out the designs and their visions for NYC below:

Santo Jacobsson, Greetings From A Growing City. Made with Procreate.

Greetings From A Growing City

"I designed the postcard to capture a vision of New York focused on improving air quality through the integration of plants and more elements of nature into urban planning. COVID has shifted many New Yorkers' priorities, with a new love of being outside, experiencing nature, slowing down, and incorporating plants into our homes for well-being. I envision the city's future taking this to the next level. Strengthening community ties and sharing skills and knowledge will unite different generations, and the diverse range of plants will represent the various backgrounds people bring from around the world."

Santo Jacobsson (He/Him) is a Trans, Ecuadorian-Swedish illustrator, writer and jewelry designer. Santo has been in New York for seven years, having moved to study Illustration at Parsons. His work has been shown at Lincoln Center and Time Square, Society of Illustrators, and featured in Mission Magazine. Santo’s work focuses on documenting the emotional and social aspects of being a trans man, both by creating work based on interviews with other trans men as well as his life mission of writing a graphic memoir. He hopes to work with Chobani, Nike and The New Yorker in the coming years.

Victoria Tentler-Krylov, Greetings From The Sky Farm. Made with watercolor and Procreate.

Greetings From The Sky Farm

"A farm floating in the sky, on a roof of a high rise, in the midst of a futuristic NYC metropolis."

Victoria Tentler-Krylov is a trained architect turned children's illustrator and author, as well as editorial illustrator. She studied architecture and urban design at Cooper Union and Columbia University. Her inspiration is fueled by urban landscapes but also by fantasy, possibility, and imagination. Victoria's other passion is experimenting with digital and traditional art tools... and in particular, pushing the boundaries of watercolor digitally.

Victoria's first author-illustrator book, Building Zaha: The Story of Iraqi-British Architect Zaha Hadid, came out in 2020 to starred reviews. She is now working on new books dedicated to introducing young readers to architecture.

James Wines, Greetings From New York - ‘Nature’s Revenge’ 2050. Made with ink and wash on paper.

Greetings From New York - 'Nature's Revenge' 2050

"This post card image is related to a series of my recent drawings, based on the theme of 'Nature's Revenge' - all featuring depictions of potential environmental situations that represent New York in 2050. The Archtober drawing illustrates the city consumed by trees and natural vegetation as a welcome, forest-like, alternative to the seemingly endless commitment to glass, steel and concrete."

James Wines, winner of the 2013 National Design Award for Lifetime Achievement, is the founder of SITE in New York City in 1970. His architecture and public space designs are based on a response to surrounding contexts. His book entitled DE-ARCHITECTURE was released in 1987 by Rizzoli International and, in 2000, Taschen published GREEN ARCHITECTURE. He has designed and built more than one hundred and fifty projects in eleven countries. The focus of his current creative work is on ‘integrative thinking’ and environmental issues. He continues to write and lecture on art, architecture and urban space internationally.

Christian Aguilar, Greetings From NYC. Made with pen, color pencils, & post-edited in Photoshop.

Honorable Mention:

Greetings From NYC

"This futuristic city is a dense fusion of efficiency and individuality, characterized by sharp angles and bold design. Buildings rise at striking angles, densely packed yet strategically arranged to optimize space and energy use, reflecting a commitment to sustainable living. The use of inverted colors adds a layer of creativity and selfexpression, making each structure stand out vividly against a unique backdrop. Light and shadow interact with the angular surfaces, highlighting the city’s balance between order and innovation. This drawing, through its inverted colors and densely packed elements, captures my ideologies of self-expression in a city that defies traditional norms, showcasing a future where every detail harmonizes progress with personal identity."

Christian Aguilar is currently in his 3rd year at NYIT pursuing a B.Arch. He has a deep passion for art and graphic design. His approach to artistic expression is marked by thoughtful compassion, as he continually seeks to explore and understand new ideas. He thrives on challenging himself with innovative concepts and is always eager to listen to diverse perspectives. This drive to expand his creative horizons shapes both his academic and artistic endeavors, pushing him to blend architecture with artistic vision in unique and meaningful ways.
